The authorities in the UK have made it compulsory for all new cars to strictly comply with Euro 6 standards for exhaust emissions of pollutants like NOx. The authorities want to assure that the real-world driving standards must be a reflection of a manufacturer’s figure.
Manufacturer and vehicle emissions standards are under strict observation of higher authorities. Basically, they want to assure the credibility and authenticity of test standards and manufacturer’s claims of emissions.
The drivers need to keep themselves up to date about the latest testing standards and procedures. The new European driving cycle (NEDC) is testing body of emission exhaust of the cars in EU and UK, it is important to mention that NEDC measures emissions under laboratory condition and Government agencies act as witnesses to these controlled environment testing, the temperature, fluid level and tyre pressure are measured with the strict parameters. The cars are selected randomly from production lines for testing purposes instead of relying on supplies by the manufacturer.
The main purpose of the Euro 6 is to bring cleaner cars and to protect the environment from harmful pollutants, the Euro 6 EU legislation is a first step towards cleaner and greener environment in the Europe and the UK. The exhaust emissions include nitrogen oxide (NOx), hydrocarbons (THC and NMHC), particular matter (PM), and carbon monoxide (CO).
The benefits of reducing these chemicals are not only limited to the environment but it also helps to increase fuel efficiency. Particular matter and NOx have serious health implications apart from polluting the environment.
The new Euro 6 regulations have set various standards for diesel and petrol engines. According to Euro 5 emission standards the permitted level of NOx was 180mg/km for diesel cars whereas Euro 6 standards has dropped down the emitted amount of NOx to 80mg/km, but for petrol cars the Euro 6 emissions standards are same as in the Euro 5 and standard stands at 60mg/km.
The environmental groups and activists have launched campaigns against diesel cars. They argue that diesel cars emit a higher level of NOx which is dangerous for the environment and human health. But it is important to note that diesel cars have a better CO2 output as compared to petrol cars. On the contrary, the society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and the automotive industry have started defence campaigns to create awareness of clean diesel technology that complies with Euro 6 standards. They have highlighted that the environmental authorities need to realise that there is a visible difference between older diesel technology and new cleaner and better diesel technology.
In a nutshell, The Euro 6 standards will ensure latest engine and exhaust treatment technology across the automotive industry in the long term.
