BMW does not need any introduction, however, what’s new about it is that recently, the i8 was crowned. The UK Car of the Year Awards started in 2014 and a panel of 27 most read motoring journalists of Britain judge this event. Each contender has to undergo strict testing in 12 different categories by the judges and they have to pick out the top performer using their expertise. Then they have to select the best among all in each class, finally deciding the overall winner.
It wasn’t unexpected at all, as last year the ‘i’ brand from BMW already won this award. BMW i8 is utilising a 96kW electric motor and a 1.5 litre three-cylinder BMW engine to power the vehicle. This back-to-back win is taken as the inaugural title for i3, which is the smaller electric vehicle from BMW.
In recent years, the world has seen very impressive hybrid cars but nothing compares to what BMW has offered in i8. And if you call it a game changer, the term would be justified cent per cent. The latest ‘i’ model, if we must say in a performance car segment, totally redefines the game.
Winning two consecutive UK Car of the Year Awards for our first two electric vehicles i3 and i8 is very encouraging. And it is the recognition of our work in the car industry for bringing in the real game changer, said Graeme Grieve, BMW UK CEO.
Having tried the i8 for the first time, most of the judges took no time to praise the technology and performance of this hybrid car. It shows that the future of the electric vehicles is not dull, and this vehicle is the perfect example of that.
14 of the 27 judges chose i8 as an overall winner while the Citroen C4 Cactus and Renault Twingo secured 2nd and 3rd places. Other participants included the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Volkswagen Passat Estate.
