Skoda has announced that their 1.2 HTP three cylinder engine has exceeded the three million units mark

The Mlada Boleslay production unit first started producing these three cylinder units in 2001 which means they were manufacturing about 230,000 engines per year.

The HTP engine stands for “High Torque Performance” engine which and in this matter the engine used in Skoda no is 1.2 litre but this technology is old and used 1.6 litre engine with naturally aspirated block then, this engine comes from EA 111 family. All economical models like Seat Ibiza, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Fabia use this remarkable engine, the polo on the other hand, have been using this engine for quite a long time but now in 2014 they have opted for less powerful 1.0 engine.

For their entry-level model range, recent models of Rapid also are using this engine. Despite of its wonderful performance, over the years, this three cylinder engine has received plenty of criticism too. The major reason was its diesel like sound in high revs which annoyed most of the drivers as well as passengers. This 1.2 litre engine is available in two versions, a 60 PS and a 75 PS unit, both of which produce only 112 Nm of torque, pretty low by modern standards.

Michael Oeljeklaus, Skoda Board Member for Production and Logistics proudly said that “Our company has been building engines for almost 115 year. This make Skoda one of the longest-established engine developers and producers in the automotive industry, the milestones of producing three million 1.2 HTP engines and 500,000 MQ/SQ 100 gearboxes prove the power of our local production. We are going to strengthen this technological expertise in the years to come.”
