Really? Are they? Well, the answer lies in the Ferrari 250 GTO which has become worlds’ most expensive car ever been sold in an auction for more than $173K per horsepower. Surprised? This means $52 million for this precious and one of a kind ’63 GTO.
According to sources, Paul Pappalardo – a Greenwich, Connecticut based collector – sold this Competition Red paint covered car to an unidentified buyer. The previous record for the most expensive car in the world was held by another 250 GTO which was sold last year, but now this one holds the crown.
You probably would be wondering, why on earth someone would pay a fortune for a simple car? What makes this Ferrari GTO so special that people are willing to pay millions for it? Firstly, the 250 GTO is a rare piece of machine, only 39 examples ever made. All of them were hand-built and possess distinctive features, thus considered ‘the ultimate car’ by the car collectors.
Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason proudly owns a GTO, has reportedly been offered $40 to $50 million for his car. The word GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato. For some unknown reasons, the name GTO has a lot of magic with it, that’s why you would see it with most of supercar brands and that’s the same reason why the limited-edition Ferrari 599 was given the name GTO.
Other expensive cars that changed hands are the 1957 250 TestaRossa which changed hands for $16 million, a 1953 Ferrari 340/375 MM Pinin Farina Berlinetta “Competizione” for $12.8 million at the auction.
