Volt was the first plug-in Hybrid car from the house of Chevrolet and was launched in 2011; however, the American automaker is selling the same idea as Holden Volt, Vauxhall Ampera and Opel Ampera across the globe. Volt is a five-door compact car which has already won several awards including 2011 North American Car of the Year.
The most advanced version of the Volt will be its 2016 model which will use the most advanced battery technology and drivetrains. A 17 kWh battery will be used in the 2016 model that will help the Volt to return 38 miles in all-electric mode.
The electric motor is enormous enough to generate 149 HP of power and 273 lb-ft of torque. It is further supported by a 1.4 litre straight-four petrol engine. It is a conventional unit that delivers 84 horsepower and 67 lb-ft of torque to deliver power to front wheels. Both power units work in a multi-mode electric transaxle to drive the Volt.
It can run from 0-62 miles per hour in 8.7 seconds. It has a top speed of 100 miles per hour which is very good for an electric vehicle of this size. Combined fuel economy of the Volt is claimed as 62 miles per gallon on electric combination. The petrol only range is rated at 40 mpg on motorway and 35 mpg in the city.
GM has also confirmed that the new Volt will be arriving at Detroit Motor Show 2015. It is making its debut with all new drivetrain and revised battery pack, drive unit and refreshed engine to boost the performance.
All new Volt will perform around 10 to 12 percent more efficiently and has 100 pounds less weight. The Volt’s range-extending petrol engine is highly refined for extended power and just like its predecessor, it sips regular unleaded fuel.
